Burlington City Arts is pleased to present the 7th annual Festival of Fools, a street festival taking place in downtown Burlington from Friday, August 1 to Sunday, August 3. The Festival of Fools is a curated festival of street theater devoted to community engagement through the celebration of circus arts, music, and comedy for family audiences. It features the best international street performers from around the globe and four main stages surrounding Church Street and City Hall Park. In accord with Burlington City Arts’ mission to make the arts accessible in greater Burlington, the Festival of Fools offers events that are free, open to the public, and appropriate for all age groups.
The festival brings the age-old tradition of busking to Burlington. Busking is the practice of performing in public places for tips and gratuities. Performers will be conducting their acts on various locations called pitches throughout the day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. While the entertainment is free, festival goers should feel free to donate to the performer if they like what they see.
On Saturday from 10am to 4pm the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont’s Kids Zone in City Hall Park will feature Fred Garbo’s Inflatable Theatre Co., Modern Times Theater, and characters from Big Nazo. There will be kid friendly performances, a traveling “crankie show” (rolling picture story), minstrel music, face painting, and hands on creative arts for kids age 6 to 14.
The Fool’s Cabaret at the bottom of Church Street will put on an evening of vaudeville hosted by Modern Times Theatre and Woody Keppel on Friday and Saturday night. The Starlight Lounge on the top block of Church Street features talented local performers and musicians Friday and Saturday night until midnight. To close out the weekend there will be a Feast of Fools on Sunday from 11am-5pm in City Hall Park with local food from Burlington City Farmer’s Market vendors such as Kalsang, Anatolian Food, Maple Tree Tea, Gracie Tamales, and more.
