Chef Contos Kitchen and Store (CCKS) hosted a burger cook-off on Sunday, June 21. Out of the seven competing burger connoisseurs, Mark Smith, owner of Green Pasture Meats and Shelburne resident, won first place with his meaty creation. Smith’s burger was composed of Green Pasture Meats beef, Bristol Bakery caramelized onion bun, roasted cherry tomato bacon relish, basil chevre, and fried potatoes. Andrea Cousineau of the Bearded Frog was the creator of the recipe.
Competition judges were Cole Ward, Master butcher, and Jake Tran of the Firebird Café in Essex Junction. Shelburne Vineyard attended the event, selling their wines by the glass and bottle. The 35 community members in attendance each received a specialty burger prepared by Chef Contos.
The next cook-off in October will be centered on apples. Courtney Contos, owner of CCKS and organizer of the cook-offs, hopes to see just as many, if not more, faces at the next event.
