X-C runners capture first, third at Metro League Championship
Top cross country runners from to L-R: Carly Neeld, Sophia Gorman, Meara Heininger, Jennifer Ireland, Emma Putre, Maeve Higgins, and Evelyn Needham brought home first place hardware from the NVAC Metro League Championship on Saturday, Oct. 18 in Swanton. Sophia Gorman, a CVU sophomore, finished in first place overall. The boys’ team took third at the event behind South Burlington and Essex. CVU sophomore Tyler Marshall finished in first place overall. The next race is the state championship on Saturday, Oct. 25 in Thetford.
Volleyball team advances as #1 seed
The Champlain Valley Union girls’ volleyball team wrapped up an undefeated regular season with three home wins in three days. On Monday the girls blanked Vermont Commons 3-0, had a 3-1 win over Lyndon Institute on Tuesday, and defeated Burlington High School 3-0 on Wednesday to claim the #1 seed entering the post season.
Field hockey team blanks Mt. Abe
Kate Burke and Caroline Hern scored goals and host Champlain Valley defeated Mount Abraham 2-0. Tashia Pashby-Rockwood earned the shutout for the 9-3-1 Redhawks.
Redhawks cruise to quarterfinals after second perfect season
Sierra Morton scored in the 16th minute of the first half to lead Champlain Valley over BFA-St. Albans 1-0 on Tuesday, Oct. 14. Hannah Pease made the assist on the game winner and Maddie Turnau made three saves for the undefeated Redhawks. On Friday three different Redhawks scored in a 10-minute stretch to beat Mount Mansfield 3-0. Bronwen Hopwood, Catherine Cazayoux, and Megan Gannon scored and Turnau had four saves. After completing a perfect regular season for the second year in a row Sydnee Lyman, Megan Gannon (assist), Sierra Morton, and Catherine Cazayoux scored two goals each to cruise past Rutland 11-0 in the first round of the D-I high school girls state championship. Lia Gagliuso (three assists), Ellie Blake (assist) and Audrey Allegretta also scored for CVU. Paige DuBrul (two), Abba Weimer (two) and Lindsey Albertelli added assists.
Boys’ soccer team rebounds from loss
CVU’s Richard Baccei scored a hat trick and had three assists in the 6-0 win over BFA-St. Albans on Wednesday, Oct. 15. Max Brown added two goals (assist) and Max Akey also scored for the 9-3-1 Redhawks. Oscar Kelly and Grant Kelley combined for four saves.
