Field hockey team advances to title game
Second seeded Champlain Valley scored twice to grab a 2-1 win over Mount Mansfield in the D-I high school field hockey quarterfinals last Friday at home. Lauren Macy and Lily Schmoker scored and Katherine King added an assist. Tashia Pashby-Rockwood made 10 stops to preserve the win. During the semifinal game Kate Machavern scored twice to lead the Redhawks over Rutland 3-1 Tuesday night in South Burlington. Kate Burke also scored with an assist by Sami Harvey. Pashby-Rockwood made three saves. Champlain Valley will play the winner of Wednesday’s semifinal between No. 1 Essex and No. 4 Middlebury for the state title at the University of Vermont on Saturday at a time yet to be determined.
Lady Redhawks on target for crown
Champlain Valley shutout BFA-St. Albans 3-0 in the D-I quarterfinal soccer game Friday in Hinesburg. Naomi Burhans scored in the first half while Sierra Morton and Bronwen Hopwood added insurance goals in the second half. Lia Gagliuso, Megan Gannon, and Anne Keen had assists and Maddie Turnau made four stops. During the semifinal game on Tuesday Hopwood scored twice and Gagliuso contributed a goal in the second half to defeat Colchester 3-0. Audrey Allegretta and Ellie Blake had an assist apiece while Turnau made two saves. The win sends three-time defending champion CVU to its fourth consecutive title game against fourth-seeded Burlington on Saturday.
Boys soccer team extends season
The fifth seeded Redhawks defeated Burlington 6-0 with goals and assists from Chris Reiss, Richard Baccei, Ollie Choiniere, and Max Brown during the D-I boys soccer first round game. Elliott Mitchell and Adam Hamilton also tallied while Oscar Kelly made four saves. On Tuesday, CVU’s Patrick McCue helped the Redhawks cruise past Hartford 4-0 with a goal and two assists in the quarterfinal game. Choiniere, Brown, and Will Yakibik each contributed a goal apiece while Shane Hanlon made an assist. Oscar Kelly and Grant Kelley combined time in goal to preserve the shutout. Boys X-C takes silver at State Championship The CVU boys’ cross country team placed second at the state championships in Thetford last Saturday.
