New Leaf Deli and Market owners, Sarah and Zachary DeFranco, pose with their daughters Madison, age 5-1/2, and Norah, age 3, in front of their new store Monday, Nov. 10.

It may have taken a ton of spit, shine, and polish for new owners Sarah and Zachary DeFranco to clean up the former Natalia’s Market on Falls Road in Shelburne, but it was worth it. “We still have a long way to go,” offered Sarah. “Of course we need more merchandise but it’s going really well.”

The store carries the basics: beverages of every kind, candy, snacks, over the counter drugs, to name a few items, plus a spotless deli offering soups and pre-made and made-to-order sandwiches. Even without a lot of inventory, New Leaf had a steady flow of customers Monday morning.

“The deli is the priority right now. Folks should try our specialty sandwiches like turkey, granny smith apple, cheddar, red onion, with cranberry mayo on sourdough or our tomato, mozzarella, maple balsamic, and pesto on ciabatta. They’re delicious,” Sarah suggested. “We have big plans. Eventually New Leaf will become more than a deli; it will also be a local market offering seasonal produce and products, a bakery, a coffee bar, a community gathering place.”

New Leaf would like to become a Community Supported Enterprise. “If anyone remembers what The Old Brick Store in Charlotte did to raise funds a few years back; that is what we would like to do,” Sarah explained. According to her Front Porch Forum post supporters provide an investment of $500 to $1,000 called memberships. Memberships are converted to debit cards (store credit) with an additional 10 percent added to the investment each month. Cards do not expire and members never lose any of their balance.

For now, Sarah is focused on taking orders for Thanksgiving pies. Community members may pre-order pies for $14.99. “I will make any kind of pie: apple, pumpkin, pecan, chocolate, even lemon meringue. The options are limitless,” she said. “Pie lovers that provide a dish will receive a $1 off. And in case you forget anything for your feast, we’ll be open Thanksgiving Day until noon.”

Located at 935 Falls Road with convenient parking in the back, New Leaf Market and Deli is open Monday through Friday 6am-8pm, Saturday and Sunday 7am-8pm. Sarah describes weekend hours as more flexible but promises definitive hours once they move into the building. “Right now we live in Milton,” she explained. “We’re moving to Shelburne soon.” To become a supporter, pre-order a pie, or for more information, please call 985-2677.
