With 10 years of experience in personal training, team training, and team program development under his belt, Joey Besl, opened a new personal fitness and conditioning center Nov. 1 in Shelburne.

Premiere Strength and Performance, an independent strength and conditioning facility, offers personal and small group training, speed and agility training, and program consultation and design at its new location at 4066 Shelburne Road, Unit E. It also offers offsite training services. An array of athletes in varying disciplines that include lacrosse, hockey, soccer, sailing, tennis, climbing, and rugby, from grade school to varsity, have chosen to work with Besl. His numerous trainer accreditations include: USA Weightlifting, American Council on Exercise, National Federation of Professional Trainers-Certified Personal Trainers, USA Rugby, and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.

“I chose to open my facility in Shelburne because it was the perfect distance for my South Burlington, Charlotte, and Shelburne clients to travel,” Besl explained. “The property is perfect in size, atmosphere, and convenience. Plus one of the services Premier offers is programming, evaluations, and strength training with area athletic teams so proximity to The Field House is a great resource for this to happen.”

A 2008 UVM gradate with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, Besl began his career at St. Xavier High School in Ohio where he implemented programs designed to minimize injury and maximize performance in football, rugby, baseball, hockey and lacrosse athletes. Besl added the Cincinnati Baseball and Sports Academy to his list of clients before moving back to Vermont.

After his return to the Green Mountain State in 2012, Besl collaborated with Sports & Fitness Edge, UVM, and Shelburne Health and Fitness. “I will continue to work with health clubs and UVM on a consultancy basis so Shelburne again provides the perfect center point for Premier to satellite around and to meet the needs of our clientele.”

After training with Declan Connolly, a UVM professor and nationally and internationally recognized exercise physiologist, Besl developed a training philosophy and program that strives to: recognize the athletic talents and weaknesses in individuals, set attainable individual as well as team benchmarks, and lastly to continue motivation of an individual so they can achieve past their own perceived limits or those dictated to them by past coaching or experiences.

Besl’s mission is to provide optimal training to athletes interested in maximizing their potential in today’s thriving, varied, and ever more competitive sports venues. For more information about Premier Strength and Performance please email or visit
