Citing his familiarity with the municipal budget process and his willingness to serve, the Shelburne Selectboard appointed Al Gobeille to the fill the three-month vacancy during its special meeting Tuesday night.
“I have a sense of duty to this town,” Gobeille offered of his desire to fill the spot. “Shelburne has a need and I am willing to serve until Town Meeting Day. As a former Selectboard member, I have been through Shelburne’s budget process five times. Of course I’m busy [with my businesses and the Green Mountain Care Board] but busy people make time.”
Within days of announcing Allison Cranmer’s Selectboard resignation, Shelburne Town Manager Joe Colangelo had applications from five highly qualified candidates in hand. In addition to Gobeille, Jaime Heins, John Kerr, Matt Ottinger, and J.C. Williams, who withdrew his application at the meeting, vied for the open position.
“We have five qualified applicants to consider but only one opening,” Selectboard Chair Gary von Stange reiterated prior to the open selection process. “Because of the caliber of the prospective candidates, the decision will be a difficult one.”
Selectboard member Toni Supple was the only dissenting vote. “I felt it would be good to have a different perspective on the board during the upcoming budget process,” she explained.
“We had five competent applicants come forward to fill the position,” Colangelo commented after the meeting. “Shelburne is a very lucky town.”
