Stowe Theatre Guild holds auditions for “Chess”

Auditions for the musical “Chess,” Stowe Theatre Guild’s third show of the summer, will be held on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 19 and 20, at 7pm and Saturday, Feb. 21, at noon at Town Hall Theatre on the second floor of the Akeley Soldiers Memorial Building, 67 Main St., Stowe. Callbacks, if needed, will be held Sunday, Feb. 22, during the day at Town Hall Theatre.

The team is seeking 16 to 20 actors, with five male and two female leads and 10 to 14 ensemble members. All roles will include dancing, singing, and character work. Actors are encouraged to sign up for audition slots by contacting producer Sabrina Sydnor at sksydnor@gmail.com.

“Chess” features music by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, formerly of ABBA, and lyrics by Tim Rice. The story involves a politically driven Cold War-era chess tournament between two men — an American grandmaster and a Soviet grandmaster — and their fight over a woman who manages one and falls in love with the other. The production will be directed by Ian Ferris, with music direction by Nate Venet, choreography by Brad Enos, and visual design by Shawn Patrick Rice.

Show dates are Thursday to Saturday, Aug. 20-22 and 27-29, and Sept. 3-5 at 8pm, with matinees on Saturday, Aug. 22 and 29, and Sept. 5 at 2pm.
