Shelburne Museum publicist Nicole Desmet notified the Shelburne News of a water break on School Street in Shelburne at 5:52pm last night; the photo she posted to Twitter showed deep cracks in the road. This morning Highway Superintendent Paul Goodrich confirmed that the incident was indeed a water break, directing further questions to Water Department staff member Chris Carlson, who said “It was a big break, but everything went well and we got it done quickly.”
Former Shelburne News intern Graham Byers also noticed the construction, and took the photo below at 7:55pm.
The break was most likely caused by frost heaves, Carlson said. As for the speed of their repair job, the water was shut off around 6pm and turned back on at 10:30pm. The only building affected was the Shelburne Community School. Carlson estimates frost in the ground is still anywhere from three to six feet deep.
