Triple crown: CVU boys’ Nordic team grabs title again, Shelburne’s Maitland completes sweep, girls finish second

CVU_StatesTeamChamplain Valley Union (CVU) senior Charlie Maitland of Shelburne claimed victory in the 5K individual freestyle race in 13 minutes and 55.8 seconds on the first day of the high school state Nordic championships in Craftsbury last Thursday.

Maitland completed his individual sweep by taking the 5K classic in 15:55 in the Vermont state high school Nordic skiing championships at Rikert Nordic Center on Tuesday, March 3, leading CVU to its third consecutive Division I boys title and fourth championship in five years.

In the classic race, CVU’s Ben Carnahan, Harken Spillane of Shelburne, and Baxter Bishop finished eighth, tenth, and eleventh respectively, to finish 56 points ahead of second place Mt. Mansfield.

On the D-I girls side, Mt. Mansfield may have grabbed the title but CVU’s Rachel Slimovitch won the classic individual race in 18 minutes and 50.5 seconds, a first for the graduating senior, and Aidan Corcoran placed tenth, to lead the girls to a second place finish. North Country’s Callie Young was second in the classic followed by Mt. Mansfield’s Amy Bruce, Rutland’s Dani Laird, and North Country’s Avery Ellis.
