Hattie Roberts is on a mission. Roberts, who will be a junior at CVU in the fall, is an ace softball pitcher and devotee of the sport who is determined to help improve the softball program at CVU. From August 10-14 she will be running an instructional camp for softball players at the CVU softball field. Any girls entering 5th grade and up will be eligible to attend.
Roberts expects about 9 or 10 other CVU players to join her as instructors, and over 15 attendees have signed up so far. “My sister has done this camp in the past, and I kind of wanted to keep it going because he played softball here at CVU,” Roberts said in an interview on the CVU softball field during an offseason training session. “I really love softball, and I want to introduce the sport to as many young girls as possible. The only way we will get a great team in the future at CVU is if more girls play at a young age.”
The camp will run weekday from 6-8pm, starting on Monday night, Aug. 10. It will focus on instruction and skill development. It is open to girls just starting out, or veterans who want to work on their game. All skill sets are welcome.
Roberts says that a big key to improving the numbers for softball in the area is to show young girls that the game is exciting and fast moving, even more so than baseball because of the shorter dimensions of the field.
She hopes this will be the chance to do that.
