The Pierson Library inaugurated a new monthly program called “Let’s Dish” on Tuesday evening, Nov. 10. Six patrons and staff gathered for an informal pot luck dinner with dishes inspired by The Mystery Writers of America Cookbook. Each participant selected a recipe in advance and then brought their dish to the communal dinner.
Nancy McGowan, joined by her husband Rick, prepared Chicken Oscar Roulade with Chesapeake Hollandaise sauce, a recipe submitted by mystery writer Charles Todd. She had tested the recipe in advance, and decided to bring her own personal touches to the dish. Instead of crabmeat, she used shrimp to give it a stronger flavor and baked it rather than boiled it as the original recipe called for. She also made a version with feta cheese, spinach and red pepper. Both were delicious.
Judy Siccama chose a pasta Bolognese dish from a recipe submitted by mystery writer Chris Pavone. She, too, made some changes in the recipe, using different herbs than those suggested and serving the cheeses on the side rather than in the dish. This tasty entree featured ground beef and veal in a tomato sauce with pasta and was heartily enjoyed by all.
Another main dish, Spicy Crock Pot Pork, was prepared by Library Director Lara Keenan, based on a recipe from mystery writer C. Hope Clark. Library patrons enjoyed the aroma of this dish all day long as it simmered in its crock pot at the library. The end result was a tangy, melt-in-your mouth entree.
Karen Leonard chose to bake the Fa-La-La Fruitcake Cookies, based on a recipe submitted by mystery writer Diane Mott Davidson, whose books always include original recipes. She also changed the recipe up a bit by adding nuts to give more texture and cohesion to the cookies. The group rated these as a delightful holiday dessert.
Another dessert, a bundt cake with chocolate chips, vanilla pudding, sour cream and yellow cake mix, was made by Carol Casey who didn’t dare to make any changes to the recipe provided by mystery writer Lois Lavrisa. This moist and rich cake was also deemed successful.
Each month, a different cookbook will be chosen. For the next “Let’s Dish” event on Tuesday, Dec. 8 at 6pm, participants will select recipes from Edwardian Cooking: 80 Recipes Inspired by Downton Abbey’s Elegant Meals.
