Cheers to Punxsutawney Phil!

Pennsylvania’s Punxsutawney Phil predicts an early spring by not seeing his shadow on Feb. 2.
Pennsylvania’s Punxsutawney Phil predicts an early spring by not seeing his shadow on Feb. 2.

Spring weather has many commuters living on rural roads mudding it to work this February. Groundhog Day, Feb. 2, usually has winter-worn Vermonters crossing their fingers and toes for warm weather as Pennsylvania’s Punxsutawney Phil peeks out of his burrow on live television.

Not this year. The groundhog emerged on schedule, but most Vermonters were already wearing shorts as Phil, sans shadow, predicted an early spring. The stress-free weather has residents of the Champlain Valley pining for snow cover.

This weekend’s weather patterns look mild, just as the chubby rodent predicted, other than some rain showers on Saturday and light snow in Sunday, the US National Weather Service said.

Thursday will see a high near 43 with evening lows around 22 degrees. Friday will be mostly sunny, but cooler with a high near 33. Evening lows will be around 21 degrees.
