With two first-place finishes at the Michael J. Baker Essex Classic held at Essex High School on Saturday, the Champlain Valley Union High School emerged with a ninth-place overall finish.
CVU’s Jarett Legg took first in the 138-pound weight class, while Jacob Griggs came out on top in the 195-pound weight class. Justin Bissonette also placed for the Redhawks, coming in fourth place in the 152-pound class.
Concord High School (N.H.) took home the team trophy, while host Essex was the top Vermont finisher in third place.
Champlain Valley 60, Colchester 41: Josh Bliss tossed in 16 points to lead all scorers and the Champlain Valley boys basketball team extended its winning streak by topping Colchester.
Walker Storey added a double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, for the Redhawks, while Matt Spear netted 10 points.
Thomas Meadows and Matt Hesford each had eight points for the Lakers (4-4).
CVU (9-1) followed up with a 63-44 win over South Burlington on Monday to extend the win streak to six in a row.
The Redhawks are ranked number one in their conference for this week.
Champlain Valley 49, Mount Anthony 33: The Champlain Valley girls basketball team opened on a 12-0 run and then closed with a matching scoring streak to down Mount Anthony.
Marlee Gunn led the Redhawks with 16 points and six steals, while Harper Mead chipped in 10 points. Jaime Vachon added 10 points for CVU, who extended their win streak to five.
Madison Little and Anna Iannotti each scored 11 points apiece for the Patriots (8-1).
Champlain Valley 2, South Burlington 2: Champlain Valley surrendered a third-period goal to rival South Burlington and the two teams settled for a 2-2 tie on Saturday night in high school boys hockey.
Collin Vincent and Joe Parento each had a goal for the Redhawks (6-1-2), while Colin Lach and Jenings Lobel each dished out an assist. Ty Parker made 34 saves in net.
Mike Flaherty tied the game in the third period for the Rebels (4-3-1) and Dylan LeClair also scored. Zach Munson had 25 stops and James Patrick had two helpers.
Champlain Valley-Mount Mansfield 7, Spaulding 4: Anna Burke had a five-point night to lead the Champlain Valley-Mount Mansfield girls hockey team to a victory over Spaulding.
Burke had two goals and three assists, Lydia Maitland scored twice and dished out and an assist and Joanna Wright stopped 11 shots for the CougarHawks (2-7). Jackie Ryan, Megan Hawley and Emily Zambrano each had a goal.
Alison Ahearn and Jessica Scott each tallied twice for the Crimson Tide (4-5) and Amber McGinley stopped 35 shots.
