CVU girls advance to basketball semifinals

Champlain Valley Union girls basketball booked a spot in the Division I semifinals for the seventh year in a row with a 45-34 win over Essex on Saturday afternoon.

The Redhawks (19-3) will take on number-three Mount Anthony tonight at 6pm at the University of Vermont’s Patrick Gym.

Abby Thut paced CVU in the quarterfinal win over the Hornets, scoring 15 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Shannon Loiseau chipped in six points and Lindsey Albertelli had seven boards.

Emmalee Smith scored 11 points for Essex.

The Redhawks’ next opponent, Mount Anthony, advanced to the finals after defeating number 11 South Burlington 34-30 on Saturday. It is the Patriots’ first appearance at Patrick Gym since 2014, when they lost to Rice 47-34 in the semifinals.
