On November 7, Shelburne residents will make history. The library and Town Center bond vote – which, if successful, will be supported by $80,000 in pledges and matching gifts with the possibility of raising $1 million or more in private donations – is an opportunity to invest in the future of our town. Staff at the Town Office are not aware of any other time in our community’s history when such a large private challenge gift was offered for a municipal project.
This is a defining moment for our town and an opportunity to come together around something positive. This project is 10 years in the making and long overdue. If the bond vote does not pass, these pledged donations will evaporate and the costs of a future project will only go up. Perhaps more importantly, we will have missed the chance to make our town center a vibrant place accessible to community members of all abilities to gather, connect, and learn.
I hope we will stand on the right side of history by voting “yes” on the library and Town Center project.
