Shelburne Community School teacher Carly Bennett has several roles in “It’s a Wonderful Life, the Radio Play,” including the part of Violet, childhood friend to main character George Bailey.

The Essex Community Players present a unique take on a holiday classic with “It’s a Wonderful Life, The Radio Play,” with performances two December weekends at Memorial Hall in Essex.

Audience members for the production are essentially members of the play’s “live studio audience” for Philip Grecian’s radio-play adaptation of the Frank Capra classic.

Like the classic film, the play traces the story of George Bailey, the Everyman from the small town of Bedford Falls, whose dreams of escape and adventure are quashed by family obligations and civic duty. It takes Bailey’s guardian angel on Christmas Eve to save him from despair and to remind him that he has had a wonderful life.

The adaptation incudes all of the story’s favorite characters: The Bailey family, Mary Hatch, Clarence, Uncle Billy, Violet, and the Scrooge-like Mr. Potter.

“It’s a Wonderful Life, the Radio Play” runs two weekends: Dec. 1-3 and 8-10; Friday and Saturday performances at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Shows at Memorial Hall, 5 Towers Road, Essex. Tickets are available online at essexplayers.com.
