Local police to increase patrols, checkpoints during holidays

The holiday DUI enforcement campaign by local police has begun and runs through Jan. 1. The goal is for officers to have high-visibility patrols and checkpoints to crack down on speeding, distracted and aggressive driving and impaired driving due to drugs and alcohol.

Local agencies including Hinesburg and Shelburne police are adding officers to their schedules for these weeks using grant money provided by the Vermont Governor’s Highway Safety Program.

Thirteen local police departments are participating in what is dubbed the SHARP effort, short for Safe Highway Accident Reduction Program. All of Chittenden County law enforcement will be involved including police in: Hinesburg, Shelburne, Richmond, Williston, Essex, Colchester, Milton, South Burlington, Burlington, Winooski as well as the Department of Motor Vehicles and liquor control officers.
