A run for their lives

VT Fish & Wildlife photo by Tom Rogers

One of Vermont’s premier wildlife-watching opportunities is happening right now as steelhead rainbow trout migrate upstream providing a spectacular display of determination as they battle springtime currents and even leap waterfalls to reach their spawning grounds. Above, a rainbow trout leaps in the Willoughby River outside Orleans village, the best place to spot steelhead in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. Lewis Creek Falls in North Ferrisburgh is another spot for good viewing in late morning and early afternoon.
