A host of Champlain Valley Union athletes represented the Redhawks last week in the Twin State matchups in baseball, field hockey and girls lacrosse.
Lydia Maitland – fresh off being named the Burlington Free Press’s female athlete of the year – helped the Vermont side to a 4-1 win in the 35th annual Twin State field hockey contest. Maitland had an assist in the win for the Green Mountain State, their first victory over New Hampshire since 2012.
Maitland then represented Vermont and CVU in the Byrne Cup matchup against the Granite State in girls lacrosse.
Maitland had a goal in 17-10 loss, with Burr and Burton’s Shayla Heekin leading the way for Vermont with four tallies.
Twin State Baseball
In the Twin State Baseball Classic, Vermont earned a sweep over New Hampshire in a doubleheader on Saturday, June 23.
Vermont got an 8-1 victory over New Hampshire in the first game, with CVU’s Jacob Bortnick adding a double and a run scored and Liam Reiner providing a scoreless inning of relief.
In the second game, the Green Mountain State pulled away for a 10-3 win and 5-3 lead in the series that resumed in 2015. Bortnick had an RBI single in game two.
Moline, Ill. 8, S.D. Ireland 2: The S.D. Ireland Legion baseball team dropped to .500 with a loss to Moline, Illinois on the road at Cranston, R.I.
Tyler Skaflestad had two RBIs to account for the two S.D. Ireland (5-5-1) runs.
Jacob Boliba earned the start, going two innings and giving up three runs on two hits. Skaflestad threw three innings of relief, while Ryan Canty pitched two innings.
