Green Pasture Meats closes Shelburne store

After five years in business, Green Pasture Meats is closing its retail locations in Shelburne village and in New Haven.

The Shelburne store closed Friday July 20, and the New Haven store – near the company’s processing plant – is set to close July 31.

Owner Mark Smith, a Shelburne resident, opened the first Green Pasture Meats store in New Haven in 2013, and then in Shelburne in 2014.

The meat from Green Pasture Meats was hyper-local. The butchers used Vermont’s first large-animal mobile slaughter unit to go farm-to-farm to provide fresh meat for cases in local stores.

Now the company is narrowing its mission.

“Our company’s focus has shifted into the wholesale market; therefore, we can no longer support our retail operations,” a message on the company website says.

The store manager did not return messages from the Shelburne News for comment.

“We will be having an inventory liquidation from now until July 31st at our New Haven store only. We sincerely thank all of our customers for your business and support over the years,” the website statement reads.
