Interest in exchange student helped land a host family

To the Editor:

Recently you printed a request to help search for a host family for Tobias, an exchange student from Germany. Many people in Shelburne and in surrounding areas responded and offered to help.

We were thrilled when Champlain Valley Union High School Principal Adam Bunting put out a welcome mat inviting Tobias to attend CVU, but unfortunately, we were unable to find a host family here.

However, at the last moment, the regional manager of Ayusa Global Youth Exchange, Tobias’ exchange organization, did find a host family, not here but in Akron, Ohio – a family with two high school-aged children. They have hosted before and are excited to have Tobias. He was to fly to New York City for orientation last week and from there he will head to Akron for a year of school.

It was truly heartwarming to see how many people wanted to help. I’m quite sure that interest was prompted the regional manager to put extra effort into placing Tobias.

I’m convinced more than ever that we are a great community.
