Car destroyed by fire after crash

Shelburne Police are still investigating a car crash on Bishop Road last month that damaged a vehicle, causing it to catch fire after the driver continued driving.

The incident happened Aug. 15. Police said they were initially called to a car crash on Bishop Road near Beaver Creek Road at 8:36 p.m.

One vehicle involved was damaged but left the scene before police arrived. Police caught up to the car travelling westbound on Webster Road, and stopped it near The Dutch Mill on Shelburne Road.

“Upon initial contact with the driver, the officer noted flames coming from the undercarriage of the vehicle,”  Cpl. Jon Marcoux wrote in a news release about the accident.

“The officer immediately had the operator exit the vehicle and contacted the Shelburne Fire Department. In less than seven minutes, the vehicle became engulfed in flames. The vehicle was a total loss.”

Alec Gorton,  20, of Bristol, was the driver of the 2005 Subaru Legacy and he was not hurt. Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors, Marcoux said.

There have been no charges brought against Gorton at this time. Police said they are still investigating.
