Eating Well gobbles up Cooking Light


Two popular national magazines, both focused on healthy cooking and eating, are combining into one magazine.

Shelburne-based Eating Well magazine is folding in Cooking Light magazine, combining the circulation of both publications for a total of 1.775 million subscribers.

Both publications are owned by Meredith Corp. based in Des Moines, Iowa. Meredith announced the move last week. The combination will nearly double Eating Well’s circulation which was just 1 million beforehand.

Eating Well Editor in Chief Jessie Price said that the magazine will keep the Eating Well name, and will increase publication from six to 10 times a year.

“We are hiring in order to support our growth,” she said, noting that more editorial staff will be needed. “There were a couple layoffs in Vermont last week,” she said, but those layoffs were in the content-licensing unit of the business.

The newly updated Eating Well’s first issue will be January/February 2019, according to the Meredith announcement.

Cooking Light will no longer be published as a traditional magazine but it will exist online with specialty magazine offerings on newsstands. “Cooking Light will continue on as a digital brand, and it will also have special interest publications which are sold on newsstands only,” Price said.

Meredith’s National Media Group is a top publisher of magazines in the U.S. with titles that include PEOPLE, Better Homes & Gardens, Southern Living, and Food & Wine.  It also operates 17 television stations and direct-market advertising operations, among other divisions. Meredith reported revenue of $262 million for the year ending June 30.
