LaPlatte Crossing project organizer Joplin James takes a break recently as the finishing touches were being done to the new footbridge over the LaPlatte River. A ceremony is planned for Sunday to officially open the new span.

The LaPlatte Crossing footbridge officially opens this weekend with a ceremony at 3 p.m. Sunday featuring a live band and refreshments.

Years of planning and the help of nearly a 100 contributors and volunteers have gone into the construction of a footbridge over the LaPlatte River. The bridge creates a shortcut through the LaPlatte Nature Park to connect the neighborhoods of Gardenside, Rivercrest, and Thompson Road to Shelburne village and the wilderness areas along the river.

The public is invited to the ceremony to celebrate the effort that went into the project, said Joplin James, a project organizer. He noted that some neighbors in the area have access via their private property. Trail users are asked to respect the adjacent private property, James said.

The celebration will have treats, drinks, and live music by the Swedish folk band, Kolonien.
