The Champlain Valley Union wrestling team headed to the Londonderry (N.H.) Holiday Invitation on Saturday and came back with some hardware.
Justin Bissonette earned the top spot in the 170 lb. weight class and Jared Forsythe was first in the 182 lb. weight class. It was the second win a row for the seniors, with both earning first place in their weight classes against Northern Adirondack Central the week before.
Will Murphy earned a fifth-place finish in the 195 lb. class, while Luke Leonard was fifth in the 113 lb. class and Matt Trifaro rounded out the strong showing with a fifth place in the 152 lb. class.
“Training is as tough as it gets, so expectations are high for these guys,” said coach Gunnar Olson in an email after the tournament. “They were true warriors with all heart this weekend, which is what we’re all about.”
CVU 41, Burr and Burton 40: CVU scored with 15 seconds remaining to grab a comeback win over Burr and Burton and capture the 4th Annual Kevin Riell Memorial Tournament win on Saturday night.
Bennett Cheer hit a layup for the game-winner, with Ethan Harvey earning the assist, to cap off the comeback after the Redhawks trailed 21-18 at halftime.
Mason Otley was the leading scorer for CVU (2-0) with 11 points and Harvey added 10 points. Cheer finished with eight points.
The Redhawks advanced to the tournament final with a 70-52 win over Lyndon in the opening game on Friday.
Harvey had 18 points to pace the offense in the season-opening win, while Noah Martin chipped in with 13 points. Cole Otley had 12 points and Nikos Carroll had 10 to round out the CVU scorers in double figures.
CVU 66, Burr and Burton 22: The Champlain Valley Union girls basketball team cruised to easy wins in their first two games of the season to win the 4th Annual Kevin Riell Tournament.
After an 87-12 win over Lyndon, the Redhawks (2-0) sealed the tournament win with a 66-22 victory over Burr and Burton on Saturday.
Harper Mead paced the offense with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Catherine Gilwee added 12 points. Makkena Boyd chipped in with nine points, four assists and four steals.
Gilwee had 15 points on Friday night to lead CVU to the win over Lyndon, while Mead added 14 points and Julia Blanck scored nine points.
Harwood-Northfield 5, CVU 4: The CVU girls hockey team opened the winter season with a loss to the Harwood-Northfield co-op team on Saturday.
Kalie French scored for Harwood-Northfield with just over two minutes to play, breaking the 4-4 tie and give the hosts the win.
The Redhawks will face off against U-32 on Wednesday at home. Puck drop is at 6:30 p.m.
The Redhawks got off to a good start on the ski slopes on Monday afternoon, with Olivia Zubarik coming in second in the giant slalom race at Burke Mountain.
Zubarik finished second in the two-run combined race, while Binney Patton came in ninth place.
