Jennifer L. Williams (JJ), age 53, passed peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019, at UVM Medical Center after a long bout with cancer. Jennifer was born Dec. 3, 1965 in Burlington and was a resident of Grand Isle.
She was predeceased by her mother, Mary Williams, and her father, Fredrik Walko. She leaves behind her half-sister Helen; stepmother Sue; stepbrother Tom; Aunt Ivy Meyers; various cousins; Carley Tillinghast; Terri Allen; longtime friend Jen S.; explorer kids James, Tiffany and Ruth; the Lynch family; and a whole list of great friends.
Jenn grew up in South Burlington. She graduated from Champlain College with a degree in criminal justice and was part of the 54th graduating class at the Vermont Police Academy. She served her country in the Vermont National Air Guard as Security Police.
She was a police officer with the Chittenden County Sherriff’s Department and the Burlington Police Department, and ended her 15 years as an officer with Shelburne Police Department.
During her time as a police officer, she spent lots of time working with victims of sexual abuse, and troubled youth through the explorer project. There are many kids that benefitted from her guidance. She was also known for many years in the softball leagues both in high school and into her twenties.
Jenn was diagnosed with cancer three and a half years ago and she fought right up to the bitter end, always with determination to beat it.
A memorial/celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 19, at the St. Rose of Lima Church Parish Hall on Route 2 in South Hero. Her interment/burial will be held in the summer at Resurrection Park in South Burlington, time and date to be announced.
There is a GoFundme site online to help offset the cost of funeral expenses: tinyurl.com/JenniferJJWilliams. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Grand Isle Rescue.
