The Champlain Valley Union High School Nordic team just completed its “Tour de Chittenden” stage race — three days of racing held over five days with 12 teams from around the state.
They also raised $800 for families dealing with cancer, especially with teammate Clark Schmitt in mind. It started with a sprint skate race at Colchester High School on Thursday, then a distance classic race at the Jericho range, and the final stage on Monday at Cochran’s ski area-skating uphill to the top.
The combined times put CVU girls on top – by one point – over Mount Mansfield and CVU boys third, behind U-32 and Mount Mansfield. These athletes are tough-starting out on last Thursday with temperatures close to 0, and then ending on Monday with spring-like conditions, with many athletes collapsing at the uphill finish.
Top scorers for CVU include: Emma Strack, Finnegan Mittelstadt, Geneva Cote, Sadie Holmes, with outstanding individual places by Chloe Silverman, Aidan Palmer, Isabelle Mittelstadt, Kate Zoller, and Emma Crum.
Top boy scorers include: Gus Lunde, Jared Leonard, Jonathan McAuliffe, Skyler Heininger, Nigel Wormser, Sam Holmes and Aaron McNally.
The next Nordic race will be Friday, Feb. 16, at U-32 High School in Montpelier.
