Kenneth James Jones

Kenneth James Jones, age 88, of Shelburne, and formerly Larchmont, N.Y., passed away on March 22, 2019, at the Wake Robin Continuing Care Retirement Community.

Ken was born in Tarrytown, N.Y. on July 20, 1930 to Elizabeth Swanson and Robert Jones. He graduated from Cornell University in 1951 and Columbia Law School in 1956.  He served in the U.S. Air Force in France after college. His career included working for a Wall Street law firm and serving as a corporate attorney and general counsel for several corporations.

He married Nancy Mason in New York City in 1965. They settled in Larchmont, N.Y., raised three daughters and lived in the same home for 43 years.

Nancy and Ken moved to Wake Robin during the summer of 2012 to be closer to their family. Ken felt fortunate to live in Vermont and to participate in family dinners and activities, including watching his grandchildren play sports. At Wake Robin, he enjoyed playing pool with other residents.

Ken’s chief hobby was running. He completed 27 marathons, five of those races with times under 3 hours. Ken carefully kept running logs, and calculated that he ran 38,782 miles between 1978-2007. He was an active member of the New York Road Runners Club and won the Runner of the Year award for his age group eight different times between 1987-2008.

Ken was predeceased by his wife, Nancy, of 53 years; and by his brother, Robert Jones.

Ken is survived by his daughter Lynda Maitland and her husband John, of Shelburne; his daughter Dianne Shrier and her husband Jason Sawyer, of Shelburne; his daughter Lauren Jones, of Arlington, Mass.; and his grandchildren Kathryn, Charlie and Lydia Maitland, and Julia and Henry Shrier.

The family wishes to thank the Wake Robin staff and residents for their kindness and support.
