New vendors set up shop at Shelburne Farmers Market

Weather is always the topic of conversation in Vermont, and never more so than at the Farmers Market, where everyone, vendors and shoppers alike, are happy when the sun shines. Although the second week of the Shelburne Farmers Market looked rather cloudy as the market opened at 9 a.m., the sun came through by mid-morning and ensured a second bright spring day for the market.

Another topic of interest at the Farmers Market is who’s new, and this year there are six new vendors joining the 40-plus producers of agricultural products, prepared foods and crafts that line the Parade Ground every Saturday through mid-October.

Last week, two new vendors, Orb Weaver Cheese and Pin Up Pickles, were introduced. This week features two more, High Hedge Farm of Charlotte and Winnie’s International Market from St. Albans.

With her spectacular and colorful array of spices, sauces and teas,  and lots of experience in creating delicious and original recipes, Winnie progressed from making meals for her friends who told her there was nothing like her wonderful cooking in Vermont, and encouraged her to reach out. Today, she has a shop in Swanton, takes her colorful wares to festivals and home shows around the state, and is now a regular vendor at Shelburne Farmers Market.

High Hedge Farm

High Hedge Farm is run by the Murphy Family who bought 165 acres of farmland off Spear Street in 2016 to reclaim it through regenerative agriculture. Bruno Murphy’s study of biology and his passion for gourmet cooking, and Tara Murphy’s life-long enthusiasm for quality food (she is CEO of Vermont Smoke & Cure) led them to focus their agricultural activities on producing 100 percent grass-fed and finished beef from their herd of Rotokawa Devon cattle, bred for superior taste and quality when grass-fed. They also bring pork from their Duroc/Hampshire cross pigs that graze on the lush pastures of their farm, as well as eggs from their pastured hens and honey from their Carolina honey bees.

    Winnie’s seasonings and spices are the best! My son, who has eaten a raw ghost pepper, loves her sauce. Check her goods out, you’ll love them too!
