Over the weekend, the S.D. Ireland Legion baseball team qualified for the 2019 Vermont State American Legion Baseball Tournament, which starts Saturday at Colchester High School.
Ireland has earned either the No. 2 or No. 3 seed, based on its league record of 14-8 with two games to go in the regular season. The team hosted the South Burlington Wildcats Tuesday at Champlain Valley Union High School and the OEC Kings on Wednesday.
During the weekend, Ireland split a doubleheader with the Franklin County Post 1 team, winning the opener 6-1 and dropping the nightcap in a squeaker, 1-0.
Ryan Canty had two RBIs in the win, while Ian Parent allowed just two hits over six innings of work to earn the win.
Parent, Jacob Murphy and Hunter Whitman each drove in a run.
Baker Angstman took the loss in the second game, giving up just the one run in six innings.
On Sunday, Ireland swept two games, beating Barre Post 10 7-3 and Montpelier Post 3 in a slugfest, 14-11.
In the win over Barre, Storm Rushford paced the offense with two hits and two RBIs while Jacob Murphy had a double and an RBI.
Calvin Wuthrich earned the win on the mound after giving up three runs on two hits in five innings.
Tyler Skaflestad led S.D. Ireland in the second win of the day with a four-hit, four-RBI effort at the plate.
Wuthrich drove in three runs, while Storm Rushford had two RBIs and Ian Parent, Brendan Tivnan and Collin Vincent each had one.
Vincent also earned the win on the mound.
Little League Baseball
The Williston Little League team is in the running in the Vermont Little League 11- and 12-year-old state tournament.
Williston, which won the District 1 tournament to qualify for the state championship, will face Franklin County on Friday at 6 p.m. The tournament is being played at Bond Field in Barre.
The winner of Friday’s game will advance to face Connecticut Valley North on Saturday at 11 a.m. to determine the state champ. The winner of the state tournament advances to the New England Regionals.
Williston fell to Franklin County on Saturday to open the tournament, but rebounded with a win over Bennington on Sunday to advance.
