Some might remember Hope Johnson's name from an article in the Shelburne News last year for winning the Governor's Award for her "Honey I'm Home" quilt. There are many other things that Hope does to fill her days that are also interesting.

Family: Hope is married to Grant Urie. They have been married for about 10 years. Grant is a fifth generation Vermonter, and he designs Merrell's shoes. Hope and Grant moved to Shelburne in 2001.

Education and Career: Hope grew up in West Orange, N.J. She attended Montclair State University for art and psychology. Upon graduating, Hope worked for the family's insurance business. After college, Hope took an adult class on quilting. While in New Jersey she began making quilts, and also taught quilt making. She loves patterns of nature, which is clearly revealed in her "Honey I'm Home" quilt that she started in 1985 and finished in 2009. This quilt was made entirely by hand. For the past five years, Hope has also been a member of the Champlain Valley Quilters Guild. Last year she made the raffle quilt entitled, "Lady of the Lake." She said it was a Vermont pattern that she researched in the Shelburne Museum Library and the Vermont Historical Society.

After moving to Vermont from New Jersey, Hope ran a bed and breakfast in Burlington called, The Woodbury Guest House. She did this for three years and said she enjoyed this time and got to meet some very interesting people. Hope has also worked at the Shelburne Museum as its head gardener. She also volunteered to help document and re-photograph the museum's entire quilt collection in 1997. For the past 10 years, Hope has owned a business known as the Garden Lady. As the Garden Lady, Hope consults gardeners, installs annuals and perennials, and plants and maintains commercial gardens. She also works for Red Wagon Plants in Hinesburg.

For about six years, Hope has also run a decorating business called Decorative Artworks. Through the business, she does decorative painting and creates home accessories, including quilts. "I painted the Portland Lighthouse landscape mural in the bathroom at Vermont Paint Company in Williston; it's a great place to go!"
