Stevenson H. Waltien Jr. - Shelburne

Stevenson H. Waltien Jr, 62, died unexpectedly on Saturday, April 10, 2010, at his residence. He was born in Saranac Lake, N.Y. on Oct. 22, 1947, the son of Stevenson H. and Frances (O'Brien) Waltien. He attended the Cranwell School in Lennox, Mass. and graduated from the University of Vermont in 1970. On May 26, 1973, he married his best friend, Lynda Darling of Barre. Steve was employed as senior resident director and vice president of Merrill Lynch's Burlington office. He was also a certified financial manager. He received the 2002 Lifetime Community Achievement Award from Merrill Lynch and a 2009 National Leadership Recognition for a resident director of Merrill Lynch. Prior to working at Merrill Lynch, Steve had an 18-year career at Vermont Federal Bank. Steve will be remembered as having a strong and passionate presence in the community as evidenced by his numerous contributions to myriad organizations. He served terms as president of the Burlington United Way, president of The Burlington Tennis Club, and president of the Greater Burlington YMCA. He was also an active member of the UVM Board of Trustees, the Fletcher Allen Hospital Board, the Governor's Council of Economic Advisors, Spectrum, and the Shelburne Zoning Board. At the time of his death, he was campaign treasurer for U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy, Board Chairman of the Stern Center, an active member of Sigma Phi Epsilon alumni association, University of Vermont alumni relations and various neighborhood organizations. Above all else, Steve was devoted to his family, the centerpiece of his life. He is survived by his adored wife, Lynda Waltien of Shelburne; his beloved children, Stevenson H. Waltien III of Chicago, Ill., and Alexandra "Ali" Waltien of Burlington. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Beverly Sassorossi and her husband Jeff of W. Lebanon, N.H.; his nephew, William Sassorossi, his niece Kristine Sassorossi, and numerous cousins and close friends.

A celebration of Steve's life was held on Wednesday April 14, 2010, in the Ira Allen Chapel at the University of Vermont. Burial will be private for the family at a later date.
