Kim Ireland
Kim Ireland and her family have lived in Shelburne since 1994. Kim is a busy mom. She also works tirelessly in her fundraising efforts for cancer research through the S.D. Ireland Cancer Research Fund, an organization she started in 1996. Here is some more information about the fund and her life.
Family: Kim is married to Scott Ireland, the owner of the local business S.D. Ireland Company. Scott took over the business from his dad when he was in college. Kim and Scott have been married for 16 years. They have three children: Dylan, 15, is a freshman at CVU; Shea, 12, and Sophie, 10, both attend Shelburne Community School. Kim is the only girl in a family of five siblings. Her three older brothers are triplets, and she has a younger brother, all of whom are still in the area.
Education and career: Kim attended Champlain College and received her degree as a legal secretary. She first worked for a lawyer in Winooski for several years and then she delved into the insurance business. She later quit her job to become a full time mom, which, as we know, is a full time job in itself. She also helps her husband with the business, coaches her daughter's softball team, and started the S.D. Ireland Cancer Research Fund. Her husband, Scott, is a melanoma survivor. Dr. David Krag, another Shelburne resident, pioneered the sentinel node biopsy that Kim credits with saving her husband's life. The biopsy is now a standard practice in breast cancer and other cancers. One hundred percent of the money the S.D. Ireland Cancer Research Fund goes to support cancer research. Kim said that the more money that is raised locally, more money can be applied for federally. The biggest fundraiser for the S.D. Ireland fund has been its St. Patrick's Day Parade, which has been a benchmark event in Burlington for nearly 25 years. The past four years, the parade has doubled as a fundraiser and has logos to go on the company trucks. In just four years, Kim said they have raised nearly $500,000. Another passion for Kim and her children is baseball. The Ireland family has a little league field in their backyard that the Town uses in the spring and summer for games or practices. In addition, the proceeds from the concession stand next to the field go to support the cancer foundation.
