Connecting Youth teens, Chittenden County START Team collaborate on "Sticker Shock Campaign"
On Sunday, April 11, a group of seven CVU students were found in an unlikely place: the beer coolers of Lantman's Best Yet Market in Hinesburg. Along with the help of one of Chittenden County's START team officers, Shelburne Police Department's Aaron Noble, the students participated in the countywide Sticker Shock Campaign. Sticker Shock is meant to reduce underage drinking by limiting youth access to alcohol. The goal is to educate people 21 and over about the legal and financial consequences of providing alcohol to minors. As the sticker indicated, consequences include up to a $10,000 fine and/or up to five years in prison if convicted of furnishing alcohol to minors. The group of students placed 750 stickers on beer, wine, and other alcoholic beverages at the market.
All seven students belong to CY-Connecting Youth's high school LEAD group (Leadership, Education, the Anti-Drug). This group organizes peer prevention activities and encourages their peers to make healthy choices. Other prevention groups throughout the county have or will be participating in this campaign this month, as part of National Alcohol Awareness Month.
