Saved by the Belt

Wed, Apr 21st 2010 12:00 pm

Patricia G. Ford of Charlotte was the recipient of the Shelburne Police Department's annual "Saved by the Belt Award."

On the morning of March 18, 2009 Ford was traveling north on Dorset Street, just south of Bishop Road. Another vehicle traveling east on Bishop Road appeared from the blind, shooting straight out into the north and southbound lanes of travel and skidded to a stop on Dorset Street. Taking immediate evasive action, Ford swerved to the right to avoid a collision. She lost control of her vehicle when she crossed the soft shoulder onto the wet grass and struck a utility pole. Ford's quick and deliberate actions prevented additional damage and possible injury to the other operator.

There was extensive driver's side, front end, and under carriage damage done to Ford's vehicle, an Audi A6 station wagon. Due to the angle of impact the air bags did not deploy. Ford was wearing her safety belt at the time of the accident. She complained of neck and leg injuries and was transported to the emergency room by Shelburne Rescue. However, based on the extent of damages sustained by Ford's vehicle, it is highly likely that further and additional injuries were prevented by the use of her safety belt. Ford was literally, "Saved by the Belt."
