New co-principal at SCS announced
The Shelburne School Board has announced that Allan Miller has accepted the co-principal position in the middle school. Miller replaces John Bossange, who retires at the end of the school year in June.
Miller will be coming to Shelburne after a 20-year career as an educator in Alaska, most recently with the Kenai Middle School. Among the positions he has held are assistant principal, first and second year statewide teacher mentor, science teacher and Russian language teacher. In addition, Miller was an Einstein Educator Fellow with the National Science Foundation and was a national finalist for the 2004 NASA Educator Astronaut selection. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College and has a master's degree from Ithaca College. Miller has also pursued graduate work at the University of Alaska and Northeastern University.
The decision to offer the position to Miller was the result of an extensive process guided by CSSU Superintendent Elaine Pinckney, SCS elementary Principal Allegra Miller, and former CSSU Superintendent Brian O'Regan. They were part of a screening committee that interviewed a number of candidates, which ultimately resulted in the board interviewing two candidates before offering the position to Miller. The committee included teachers Vasanthi Meyette, Eric Brunvand, Alan Mihan, and middle school counselor Rachel Petraska. The search committee also included SCS parents Becky Gamble, Alice Brown, and Kathy Brooks. "The board wishes to extend our deepest appreciation to the volunteer members of the screening committee, without whom we couldn't have done this," said board member Russ Caffry.
Miller and his wife Joan both have roots in the northeast and together made the decision to move "home" to be closer to family. They plan to reside in Shelburne with their three school age children. Caffry continued, "We can't wait to welcome Allan and his family to Shelburne this summer and to our school in August. We're confident that together with Allegra Miller (no relation) SCS has two top-notch leaders to guide our school forward."
