Teen Shakespeare Camp at the Waldorf School

Wed, May 12th 2010 01:10 pm

This summer brings the second season of the Teen Shakespeare Camp, hosted at the Shelburne campus of Lake Champlain Waldorf School (LCWS). This year's camp will spotlight Shakespeare's hilarious comedy, "Twelfth Night." "Twelfth Night" is one of Shakespeare's most enduring comedies, a classic tale of shipwrecked twins, pining lovers, and scheming servants.

The camp is for students ages 12-16 (rising 6th to 10th graders), and offers a dynamic theater program that includes drama and improvisational games with a study of Shakespeare's language and life - this year with a special focus on comic gesture and timing. Actors will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with experienced teachers to increase expressive range and quality through monologues. Afternoons are devoted to rehearsals for an outdoor performance of "Twelfth Night," to be staged in the woods near the Waldorf School. The camp runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in two sessions: Session I, from June 28-July 2, and Session II, from July 4-July 9. Each week will culminate in a fully costumed, musical performance of scenes from "Twelfth Night." Those who play an instrument or sing will have opportunities to perform. Students may attend one or two weeks.

A team of three artists and educators leads Shakespeare Camp. Stephan Vdoviak, LCWS high school and middle school teacher and experienced director, will lead the team. Abigail Diehl-Noble, LCWS high school and middle school English teacher, supports language and context, and Christopher Diehl-Noble, LCWS middle school teacher and musician, directs music.
