People of Shelburne
Kim Stevens
Kim is an active Shelburne resident whose involvement in Town activities reaches from Shelburne Little League to Shelburne Nursery School. See here for a few more details about her life.
Family: Kim is married to Chuck Stevens; they have been married for 15 years. They met in Boston where they attended different colleges. Kim and Chuck have three children: Thomas, who is 12 and in sixth grade at the Shelburne Community School (SCS); Ben is 10 and is in the fourth grade at SCS, and Sophia is six, and attends kindergarten at SCS.
Education and career: Kim was born in New York State and moved around with her family for the first nine years of her life. When she was in fourth grade her family settled down in Bedford, N.H. Kim went to college at Simmons College in Boston, and her then-future husband went to Tufts University. After graduating from college with a degree in psychology, Kim began working for the District Attorney's office in Boston. Chuck was attending UVM to receive his master's degree, and Kim laughs as she explains that he sent her resume throughout Vermont so that she would get a job and move a bit closer to him.
In 1991, Kim moved to Barre and did advocacy work for a non-profit entitled Our House of Central Vermont. She worked there for five years until she and Chuck started their family. Then she was employed by Stop It Now Vermont, an organization that worked for the prevention of child abuse. In 1995, Kim and Chuck moved to Chittenden County, and not long thereafter, settled down in Shelburne. Presently, Kim's priority is staying at home to raise happy, healthy children. Recently, she started substitute teaching at SCS for pre-school through fifth grade. She said this work dovetails perfectly with her family schedule because she can still be at home in the afternoons when her children get home from school.
Volunteering in Shelburne: Kim has been on the board of the Shelburne Nursery School for all of the years her children were there. Last year she was president of the board, and this year she is a trustee. Kim has also been on the board for Shelburne Little League for several years. She said that her entire family loves baseball, and that she used to play softball. She said when she began her time on the board that she was able to bring a different voice; Kim was one of the only non-coaches on the board at that time. This year she is the only female on the board. Throughout her years on the board, Kim has tried to help make Little League accessible to every child. Scholarship programs are available for those who need it, as are rides to and from games. She has also helped to schedule games, write expectations for parents, coaches, and players, and this year she is a co-player agent. That means that she helps put together the 250 players on 27 teams. This year she also coaches her daughter's T-ball team and is happy to see the softball program grow and become more active.
