Young Shelburne percussionist to appear on NPR's "From the Top"

Eighteen-year-old percussionist and Rice Memorial High School senior Nicholas Bonaccio of Shelburne will appear on an upcoming episode of "From the Top," the NPR radio program featuring America's best young classical musicians and hosted by pianist Christopher O'Riley. Broadcast from Burlington, the show airs nationally the week of May 10 and will air on Vermont Public Radio 90.9 FM Sunday, May 16, at 5 p.m. The episode was taped before a live audience at the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, Feb. 12.

 

Nick studies with drummer Rich Magnuson and with Jeremy Levine, the principal timpanist of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra. He began taking percussion lessons in fourth grade and joined the Vermont Youth Sinfonia in 2005. He progressed into the Vermont Youth Philharmonia the following year, and has been a percussionist with the VYO since 2007. Nick is active in local theatre productions, performing arts camps, and music festivals. He will attend the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y. beginning in the fall.

 

On the broadcast, Nick performs "Ritmico Con Brio from Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra" by Joseph Schwantner with the Vermont Youth Orchestra, conducted by Andrew Massey. He is joined by 11-year-old cellist Leland Ko from Weston, Mass. and 18-year-old pianist JeeHae Ahn from Seoul, Korea.
