Things, or at least barbeque pits, will be heating up this Saturday when Shelburne's own Jamie Bissonnette of the Dutch Mill Restaurant competes for the title of "Best Darn BBQ." He will be up against pit bosses from Butler's Restaurant at The Essex Spa and Resort and Black Diamond Catering of Lake Elmore. For a $10 donation to CUFF Cancer, attendees will be treated to mouth-watering BBQ, side dishes, and Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream. Live musical entertainment provided by Vermont's own "Rick Redington & The Luv," additional family entertainment with children's face painting and a bouncy castle.

"It's going to be a fun event for the whole family and for a great cause," states Michael Macarilla, lieutenant commander at Vermont State Police Headquarters.

The "pork-off" is at Green Mountain Harley-Davidson, 157 Pearl Street, in Essex Jct., so it is only fitting that the day's events starts with an optional group motorcycle ride from 10-11:30 a.m. (all makes and models are welcome). The BBQ cook-off contest runs from noon to 3 p.m. with all vying for the "Big Pig Trophy."

CUFF Cancer (Cops United for Fighting Cancer) is hosting the fundraiser. Since its inception in 1998, CUFF Cancer (www.cuffcancer.org) has raised over $190,000 for Camp Ta-Kum-Ta. Located in South Hero, Vermont, Camp Ta-Kum-Ta (www.takumta.org) provides a safe and loving place for children stricken with cancer. These children from Vermont and New York visit Camp Ta-Kum-Ta to play, swim, share, and heal. It's a special opportunity to reclaim a childhood robbed by cancer.
