Lowell Thompson is a well-known local musician and still calls the Shelburne/Burlington area home. Although he travels frequently for his music, you'll also find him playing at Shelburne Vineyards on Thursday evenings and at other venues around the Burlington area. Here are some other interesting facts about his life in Shelburne and beyond.

Family
Lowell's father, Larry Thompson is a local contractor. His mom, Donna McNamara is a nurse who specializes in Alzheimer's disease and works at The Arbors in Shelburne. His brother, Colin, is currently living in California. Lowell's sister, Mary Ann, lives and works in the Shelburne area too.

Education and career
Lowell was born in Burlington and grew up in Shelburne. He spent most of his school years at SCS, and graduated from CVU. Following graduation, Lowell took a year off, moved to Colorado, skied, and worked. When he returned to Vermont, he attended UVM, where he graduated with a major in political science and a minor in English. In college, Lowell played lacrosse and started getting serious about music during his senior year. After graduation, Lowell moved to California and started playing more music, writing songs, and recording. During that time, a friend insisted that he should enter a music contest, with the winning prize being time in a recording studio. Lowell won that contest, and returned to Vermont to record his second album. From this recording time, the musicians stayed together to form the band known as Lowell Thompson and Crown Pilot. They will be performing on July 11 at Higher Ground, where they are featured as Artist of the Month. Higher Ground likened the band's music to "Gram Parsons, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, vintage Rolling Stones, and the various Americana revivalists that used to grace the cover of ‘No Depression.' " When Lowell is not touring with the band, he plays solo or tours with other bands. He says that after coming back from time spent playing someone else's music, he is all the more focused and inspired to get serious about producing and playing his own music. His future includes making more music and getting better at his craft.
