Shelburne News' tree sapling give away - send us your news

Over the last four years, the Shelburne News has encouraged folks in the community to dig in and green up our yards and plant trees. To date, our tree sapling giveaways have been varied and well received. The first year we gave away spruce, the second year hazelnut, the third year elderberry, and our fourth year we gave away silver maples. Now we are curious. How are those trees and bushes progressing? Taking the time to make certain that the young plants have a healthy, strong start will bolster the tender saplings to survive the heat of midsummer (yes, even Vermont's midsummer heat is taxing for young sprouts). Moreover, then when cooler temperatures arrive in September the young trees are more hardy and ready to transition to winter sleep.

Shelburne News began its sapling give-away and green-up tradition four-years-ago; tell us how it's going. Share your tales of woe and your brilliant successes as well. Can we help? Has a neighborly green inspiration come over you? Is your Shelburne neighborhood greener? Please send your photos and stories to mary@windridgepublishing.com.
