The Green Mountain Draft Horse Field Day on Saturday, July 31 at Shelburne Farms attracted draft horses of all sizes and colors, draft horse owners and drivers of all ages and a crowd of spectators.

Horse-drawn wagons brought visitors to the fields where teams of draft horses demonstrated the use of traditional machinery to cut and rake hay, plow fields and roll logs. Anne Harper of Orwell gave an illuminating commentary throughout the day, talking about the history of the various breeds, their importance in early agriculture and how they are being used today where farmers value the sustainability of real horse power. From the mighty Shires, bred in England to haul heavy wagons, to the tiny miniature horses, bred to work in the low shafts of British coal mines, Green Mountain Draft Horse Field Day was a showcase for a broad representation of equine breeds.
