Three Shelburne friends and budding artists
Lydia Maitland, Gabriel Booth, and Hadley Crow are three Shelburne girls, friends, and artists in their own right. Since last January, they all met after school in the hallway and walked down to the Shelburne Craft School where they would take a wheel-throwing pottery class. The girl's clay instructor, Rik Rolla, enjoyed watching the children grow in skill and blossom as artists.
"They all have a unique and individual style and they respect each other's art," said Rolla.
"They inspire each other and have fun together."
Lydia is 10 and entering fifth grade. Lydia creates at home in her basement, she draws, sews, and incorporates recycled materials. Lately, she has been focusing on drawing trees and recently wrote a story entitled "How to Draw Trees" for a class assignment. She often uses her tree drawings as surface decoration on her pots.
Gabriel Booth is 11 and entering the sixth grade. Being "green" is part of her family's philosophy. She loves to create things from salvaged materials. She made a compost bin on Earth Day as a gift to her mom for Mother's Day.
Hadley is also 11 and entering the sixth grade. Although she participates in many sports, Hadley also enjoys art as a creative outlet. She loves to throw clay on the wheel and hand build furniture for her American doll collection.
