This week we feature another Shelburne resident who teaches in Town. Joey Adams fits the bill, as he has taught at the Community School for the past 11 years.

Family: Joey's father was in the Navy and stationed aboard the USS Forrestal. Joey was born in Portsmouth, Va. and lived there with his family, which includes a younger brother and sister, until Joey was four; the family then relocated to Glens Falls, N.Y. Joey now resides in Shelburne with his wife, Lynn, and their 9-year-old daughter Cali (named after the Hindu goddess of energy), and their son Collin, 7.

Education and Career: Joey attended SUNY-Cortland, graduating with a degree in corporate wellness, and a minor in history. He went on to receive a master's degree in exercise science from Colorado State University. "I had never been farther west than New York, so this was a good chance to do that. And I wanted to go west for the skiing." His wife Lynn, whom he "gleefully" met in 1987, accompanied him to Colorado. They returned east in the early 1990s, settling in Burlington, which reminded Joey of Boulder in many ways. He was hired by Twin Oaks Sports and Fitness in 1991 and remained there through 1999 as the company grew and acquired the Racquet's Edge. "I did everything: sales, corporate wellness, and fitness classes - you name it." In 1998, Joey took advantage of a special program offered at UVM: an accelerated one-year course of study for individuals with liberal arts degrees interested in teaching. Joey and Lynn both went through what he calls the "intensive year of study," then landing his first teaching position at the C.P. Smith school in Burlington as a third grade teacher. It was fortunate for SCS that Joey was riffed from that position after one year because he then applied at SCS, and in 2000 was hired to join Jean Cota teaching on the Odyssey Team (third through fifth grade).Three years hence, he and Cota moved to the school's Voyager Team. "Jean and I have the distinction of being the longest standing teacher team in the school."

Hobbies: In his own words, "running amok with my family and living a vegan life." Additionally, Joey owns "Intelligent Fitness" in South Burlington, located at Dee's Physical Therapy on San Remo Drive. The company offers exercise and performance testing, allowing individuals to make the most of their exercise time by target-based training. Then there is his involvement with Cycle Ops: he is an educational presenter and teaches health clubs how to use the company's computer-based monitors for indoor cycling.

Favorite food: Vegan. Joey has been vegan for the last 20 years.

First concert: "My grandmother took me to see the Philadelphia Philharmonic Orchestra at Saratoga Performing Arts Center!"

Favorite books: Joey loves reading children's literature. His favorite books include Maurice Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are," and "Story People" by Brian Andreas.
