Shelburne boys win tennis championships
Brothers Dylan Schaefer and Jake Schaefer of Shelburne were crowned 2010 Vermont National Country Club (VNCC) Jr. Club Singles Champions in their respective age groups (14 & under and 10 & under) while Harrison Thayer of Shelburne and his tennis partner Lucas Shaw earned the title of VNCC 14 & under Jr. Doubles Champions on July 31 in South Burlington.
In the 14 & under singles round robin Dylan Schaefer and Thayer were the top two finishers. Schafer won four more games than Thayer to earn the title of 14 & under VNCC Jr. Club Champion. "Dylan used his power and spin to finish a point from both the baseline and net positions," according to VNCC head teaching professional Kim Mihan. "His strong and consistent left-handed serve earned him points. Plus his ability to move his opponents around the court forced his opponents into making errors," she said.
"Harrison Thayer is the most patient of players, able to keep his opponents deep and on the defensive," Mihan offered. "He is a thoughtful all-court player, who is willing to stay on the court as long as it takes to win." And win he did. Thayer earned the title of 14 & under 2010 VNCC Club Finalist.
The boys 10 & under singles championships included three first-time tournament participants: Arthur Potter, Hugh Gist and Jake Schaefer. Schaefer earned the title of the 10 & under 2010 VNCC Jr. Club Champion, Potter was the 10 & under Club Finalist, while Gist placed third.
Many singles players teamed up to play in the 14 & under doubles championship. Matthew Palmer teamed with Dylan Schaefer; David Boerman teamed with Ben Masson of Shelburne; Jake Grabowski partnered with Oliver Masson of Shelburne; and Harrison Thayer played with Lucas Shaw. At the end of the day, Oliver Masson and Jake Grabowski earned the Finalist Title and Lucas Shaw and Harrison Thayer earned the title of 2010 VNCC Jr. Doubles Champions.
