Liz Hollenbach

People of Shelburne

She is a familiar face at Bolton Valley and on the race circuit. Liz lives in "the pink house" on Harbor Road, so she is also a familiar face in town. Here's what else we learned about her:

Background: Liz's parents, John Hollenbach and Beth Phillips, lived in No. Ferrisburgh when Liz was born. She has one younger brother, Jake, who is an "incredible" bike racer, and works at the Ski Rack. The family moved to Shelburne Liz's sophomore year in high school, and she attended CVU. "The pink house" is owned by her parents, and Liz is the property manager for the apartments and grounds, as her mother and father have spent the last four years in Egypt, working at the Cairo American College, an international K-12 school.

Education: After CVU, Liz attended and graduated from St. Lawrence University with a degree in environmental sociology. An avid skier (and runner), she was a member of the school's ski team, competing in the NCAA Div. III championships "a few times." Following her graduation, she raced and travelled before returning to the Canton, N.Y. campus to pursue a master's degree in education, and to coach the school's ski team.

Career: Liz returned to Vermont in 2003 to accept the position as assistant ski coach at UVM. "It was a great job," she said of her four years at UVM. During her tenure, the school hosted the NCAA Championships at Stowe. That year UVM finished in second place. Four years ago, Liz accepted a job managing the Nordic Center at Bolton Valley, which affords her summers off. The only down side to the job is that it keeps her too busy throughout the winters to compete in racing. That's why she takes to running in the summers.

Hobbies: It's pretty obvious that skiing and running would top her list. Liz runs in 5K and half marathons, both road and trail courses. She then finds time to play soccer on a women's league, garden, quilt, and read. One of her favorite sources of reading material is the literary magazine, "The Sun" which she was introduced to by her aunt, a writing professor at Johnson State College. As of press time, she was preparing for a relay race to benefit the Boys and Girls Club, and was looking forward to joining friends and fellow members of the St. Lawrence Running Alumni Club. "It's a great way for us to stay connected."

First concert: "Phish" at Sugarbush

Bucket list: Liz returns to her job at Bolton Valley next week, she opted to supply a "near-sighted" list of things she wanted to accomplish before then. It includes: A visit to the Alzheimer's quilt exhibit at Shelburne Museum, berry picking at Shelburne Farms, arrange at least one more swim in Lake Champlain, and try to find a renter for a one bedroom apartment in "the pink house." It's refreshing to hear a list of "must do's" that can all be accomplished in a single zip code. However, as Liz mentioned, skiing has offered her plenty of travel opportunities, and she has spent time with family in Egypt. Now her focus is on how to spend the fleeting days of summer before returning to the mountains and her passion.
