Don't just see red this February - be red!

Local heart transplant recipient invites all to go red on Friday, Feb. 3

The world will look a bit more rosy on Friday, Feb. 3. Actually, the shade will be red. Staff at more than 70 work sites in Vermont will be wearing red that day, National Wear Red Day, and donating $5 each to the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women movement. That money helps fund research to save lives, and raise awareness of the fact that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women in America.

"I know firsthand how important research is," said Anne Buckley of Shelburne, who is a heart transplant recipient and will speak at this year's Vermont Go Red for Women Luncheon at The Sheraton on Thursday, Feb. 16. "Scientific progress has meant that I have a chance to live a long and healthy life. Red is a powerful color and I hope everyone will wear red and join us in the fight against heart disease on National Wear Red Day."

The American Heart Association founded the Go Red for Women movement in 2004 to raise awareness of heart disease in women, while raising money to fund research to improve cardiovascular health among all American women. A woman dies every minute of heart disease.

Landmarks across the country are illuminated red on National Wear Red Day, and celebrities locally and nationally wear red on Friday, Feb. 3.

To participate in National Wear Red Day, call the local American Heart Association office at 802.878.7700, visit GoRedForWomen.org or email Joy.Blandford@heart.org.
