WinterFest morphs into celebration at town gym

Word spreadFriday afternoon that for the first time in its 27-year history WinterFest would have to be cancelled. It wasn't so much due to the lack of snow, because there was a plan in place (involving a Hawaiian theme, complete with leis and volleyball) to deal with snowless conditions at Shelburne Farms. The cancellation was more the result of icy conditions at the Farm Barn's courtyard, which would have been the site of many WinterFest activities.
With a quick change of gears a "Family Fun Afternoon" was hastily organized at the Town Center to take WinterFest's place. Two of the entertainers, Brent McCoy of "The Real McCoy Show", and Andrew Pinard from "Absolutely Magic" were able to quickly change venues.
"Much as we were disappointed at the need to cancel WinterFest, I was pleasantly surprised at our turnout Saturday afternoon," supplied Recreation Dept. Director Betsey Cieplicki who helped organize both the plans for WinterFest and the hastily designed Family Fun Afternoon. "I counted well over 100 kids. Those entertainers were great - they kept all the kids in the audience completely captivated."
As had been initially slated for WinterFest, the 4-H Explorers were able to host their bake sale at the Town Center and the Rec Dept. volunteers were on hand to make their traditional popcorn balls. Quick thinking and hard work on the part of volunteers helped to save the day.
